Harvard College has announced that all undergraduate classes will switch to a new grading system for Spring 2020. Instead of letter grades, courses this term will utilize an "emergency satisfactory" (SEM)/"emergency unsatisfactory" (UEM) system. A full Q&A about this new policy can be found on the DSO website.
This policy supersedes the Gov Dept's previously announced pass/fail policy for Spring 2020. The Department will count SEM grades toward all concentration and secondary-field requirements.
Please note that this change does NOT affect thesis grading, which is still governed by the policy outlined in the Department's Guide to Writing a Senior Thesis in Government. It also does not affect the calculation of departmental honors recommendations for current seniors, which are made before grades are released during the spring semester.
